[...] Joe Ageyo, journalist at Kenya’s NTV and one of the emerging leaders in the GEG Project, reported daily from the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. His interviews included UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, Chair of the G-77 Ambassador Lumumba Di-Aping, and European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek. Among the many stories from the conference, Ageyo lent much of his coverage to the ongoing conflict between developing countries’ needs and the response from developed countries.
[...] Philip Osano, a doctoral candidate at McGill University and GEG Emerging Leader has become regular host with the Kenyan Broadcasting Company television program, “Eco-Show.” The hour-long program discusses relevant environmental issues, including global environmental governance and Kenyan-specific environmental concerns. Prior to his hosting position in September 2009, Osano himself was featured in an hour-long segment on global environmental governance. As host, Osano has conducted four major interviews, including one with John Scanlon, principal adviser to UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and GEG Forum participant, two with Dr. Kevin Urama of the Africa Technology Policy Studies/African Society for Ecological Economics, on economic growth and environment in Africa as well as a mid-term review of the Copenhagen Conference, and the latest with Professor Sir Brian Heath of Cambridge University and President of the European Academy of Sciences Advisory Council.
[...] Kristen Hite, one of the GEG Emerging Leaders, participated in a side event on a potential UNFCCC complaint mechanism for REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries) on November 4, 2009 in Barcelona. The mechanism would help secure the rights and interests of indigenous peoples and traditional forest dependent communities. Kristen Hite, who works as a staff attorney for the Climate Program at the Center for International Environmental Law in Washington DC, outlined six key principles for the design of such a complaint mechanism: accessibility, transparency, independence, credibility, efficiency and effectiveness. You can watch her full presentation here (starts at min. 15.43 of the video). Moreover, the slides of Kristen Hite’s talk are available for download.
