The former environment and development minister of Norway, Erik Solheim, has been appointed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to head the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Solheim is currently the chair of the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the special envoy for environment, conflict and disaster at UNEP.

Achim Steiner, who is leaving the post of UNEP Executive Director in June, has led the organization for 10 years through major events such as the Rio+20 conference, which concluded the decade-long reform process of UNEP. He has been appointed as the new director of the Oxford Martin School and will start his tenure in the Fall 2016.
