Bob Massie, executive director of the Sustainable Solutions Lab at UMass Boston and former president of Ceres, writes about leadership of the private sector in environmental and social action, especially in regards with climate change, and the opportunities for growth of sustainable investment based on growing data. His most recent article, Welcome to the ESG Evolution, was published on on Institutional Investor and highlights initiatives in the United Nations as well as in different fora that have led the way to an engaged discussion about the opportunities and challenges of climate action.

He notes,

“The concept of sustainability has been moving from the periphery of investment and business toward its center for a generation. As sustainability has become more important, scores of new institutions have arisen to promote the release of information about corporate environmental, social responsibility and governance (ESG) performance.”

Massie also writes about the role of data and information on sustainability, rather than simple financial performance, for guiding investors. The shift is considerable, and he sees a great opportunity for the industry to mirror international and domestic political signals regarding decarbonization and sustainable economies.
