The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has released a new paper following up on Rio+20 and the future of UNEP. The paper is entitled “The Future of Sustainable Development: Rethinking Sustainable Development after Rio+20 and Implications for UNEP.” It is based on discussion from an informal meeting that IISD convened in Abu Dhabi in December, 2012.
In Abu Dhabi, IISD senior fellow Simon Zadek moderated discussions between senior UN officials, CEOs, academics, civil society leaders, and environment ministers. UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner was present for the discussions, as was some of his senior staff. They discussed why the international environmental community has been unsuccessful in ‘selling’ sustainable development, and how to better promote the issue in the future. “The Future of Sustainable Development” reflects on the Abu Dhabi talks on distills many of the pertinent arguments and salient points made there.
