UNEP:Biodiversity Year Ends on a High Note
The UN General Assembly approved a resolution to establish the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The body was created to respond to the loss of biodiversity and the world’s economically-important forests, coral reefs and other ecosystems.
IPBES will be similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and will assist in increasing the world knowledge of the erosion and degradation of the natural world. It will provide reports and policy options to governments, and will be a clearing house for scientific knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystems.
