Mohamed Nasheed, the recently-ousted President of the Republic of the Maldives, is going to speak at the Low Library at Columbia University on Thursday, March 29th, 6:30-8pm following the opening of the new film, The Island President. President Nasheed is the subject of the new film, which features the Maldivian President participating in the global arena of climate change negotiations. The film focuses on former President Nasheed’s role as a leading representative of the small island nations that face total destruction due to rising sea levels caused by climate change.

A marine scientist by training, former President Nasheed is acutely aware of the dangers that face low-lying island areas should climate change continue unabated. At the event, he will give an address and answer questions. The event is hosted by Columbia Law School’s Center for Climate Change Law. It is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required here.

The film will open in New York at Film Forum on March 28th, 2012, and will be in theaters around the United States soon thereafter. To view the trailer, click here.
