Young Academies Issue Statement to Address How Science Can Help with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

On October 26, 2017, the Global Young Academy released a joint statement on “The Role of Young Academies in Achieving the UN SDGs.” The statement is an outcome of the Third Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies in July 2017, hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa. The statement addresses the questions of how young academics can contribute to meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and how science and technology could be used to achieve the SDGs. One of the core recommendations given by the statement is that young academics should be involved more actively at national and global levels. The document presents three important areas to which young academics can contribute:

  1. Take a more active role in promoting interdisciplinary scientific approaches to SDG implementation.
  2. Take a leading role in bridging the gap between science and the public by raising awareness of the SDGs among pupils and within civil society and the media.
  3. Enhance leadership skills through training in the SDG processes.

The statement invites policy-makers and senior scientists to work with the young academics towards sustainable “global science.”

The Global Young Academy was established in 2010 with the goal of raising the voices of young scientists around the world. Currently, there are 200 members and 134 alumni from 70 countries.
