New UN Website for Sustainable Development and Follow up to Rio+20

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) recently presented the UN new web-based knowledge platform for sustainable development (Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform SDKP).  The site describes different sustainable development activities within the UN system, and it provides resources and links to nearly 6,000 related documents.

Many of the links are connected to the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. A special section follows the Rio+20 process, describes the outcome document, “The Future We Want,” and explains the action-oriented approach of the conference. The sustainable development in action page highlights the participation and commitments of different actors around the partnerships for sustainable development and the green economy policies and initiatives. It lists the 710 voluntary commitments made by businesses, civil society, governments, and other stakeholders. The website also outlines the current processes in the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will be based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as part of the process for the post-2015 development agenda.

In particular, the new platform offers a space to follow up to the main results from Rio+20. If users previously had a username/password to the Rio+20 conference website, this is still valid for the new knowledge platform. As of October, 2012, the new website will allow more direct interaction: sharing relevant news, meetings, topen consultative process, the chance to sign up for partnerships, and more.

The platform presents analysis on the key topics including in the Rio+20 outcome document and contains additional links related to Agenda 21 and the Commission for Sustainable Development. The resources section features selected publications and different types of documents and reports on sustainable development. The documents library contains tools for users to search through the main agreements and conventions related to sustainable development.
