With 454 days left until the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in Rio de Janeiro 4-6 June 2012, the 2nd Preparatory Committee Meeting ended in New York on Tuesday 8 March 2011. The two-day meeting brought together government delegations and other participants from most countries in the world, with the aim to bring the conference preparations forward both in terms of substance and process.

The agenda for Tuesday 8 March focused on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (IFSD). Governments, UN entities and international organizations, and civil society major groups presented pre-written statements describing their thoughts and positions, sometimes responding to the questions presented by the UNCSD Bureau on how they would like to see the global governance architecture reformed in the field of environment and sustainable development.

The Co-Chair’s Summary of the 2nd PrepCom will soon be available on the official website for UNCSD. Another summary and analysis from the meeting will be produced and published by the IISD Reporting Services on Friday 11 March 2011. Links to both these documents will also be posted on the GEG website.
