June 27, 2009: One Day to the Global Environmental Governance Forum

Welcome to the Global Environmental Governance Project blog!  Between today   and July 2, the Secretariat of the Global DSC07088Environmental Governance Forum will be blogging from Glion, Switzerland each day of the Forum with news from the events of the day’s sessions.  We look forward to any comments you might have.

Anticipation for the GEG Forum began to build today.  This morning we settled into the home of the Forum – the beautiful Hotel Victoria – and began final preparations for the coming sessions.

Eagerness for the Forum continued to escalate throughout the morning with the Lunch June 27arrival of several key participants—John W. and Christel McDonald, Bill Ruckelshaus, Gus Speth, and Maurice Strong.  We had a wonderful opportunity this afternoon to begin learning from these founders and architects of the global environmental governance system, ahead of the official start of the Forum.  Gathered around several tables in the hotel dining room, we discussed what could be gained from the Forum, the potential they saw for the unique meeting that will begin the very next day, and why they themselves had chosen to attend.  Such access to the accumulated knowledge and insight of even the select group at lunch today has provided a glimpse of the discussions in days to come.  Finally meeting in person and hearing from some of the participants we had been working with for months was indeed a great opening to the Global Environmental Governance Forum.
