Dr. Maria Ivanova, the Director of the Global Environmental Governance Project took part in the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum in three capacities: 1) she was a representative of North American civil society, 2) a presenter at the High-Level Gender Forum hosted by the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment, and 3) a moderator of a ministerial roundtable on international environmental governance. Clare Stankwitz, a student at William and Mary and a Research Associate with the Global Environmental Governance Project, also attended the GC/GMEF and undertook research for a Monroe scholarship awarded by the College of William and Mary.
Held in Nairobi, Kenya at UNEP’s headquarters from February 16 to February 20, the 25th session of the GC/GMEF made several landmark decisions. Environment ministers attending the Global Ministerial Environment Forum launched a one-year ministerial consultative process on international environmental governance. Ministers also discussed and affirmed the importance of a green economy, particularly in the wake of the global financial crisis. This GC/GMEF also resulted in a landmark agreement by ministers to negotiate a legally binding convention on global mercury pollution.
